Bequia

By Ewan | March 20, 2009

Bequia is an island of quiet secluded stunning beaches, music festivals and huge Sprite bottles!

With the music festival going on the anchorage was busy, but we managed to find a decent spot which turned out to be close to some of the festivities, although a reasonable tender ride from the main town.

By night we enjoyed the music festival, which was a mixture of country and western and blues. Alex and Duncan went hard the first night, and returned to the boat the following morning to catch up on some sleep. Meanwhile, Charlie, Denise and Ewan went to explore the island. After the slowest taxi ride ever, we arrived at the turtle sanctuary set up by ‘Brother’ King. Born and brought up in Bequia, Brother was a career skin diver who started the sanctuary as a semi-retirement project. After doing a turtle sanctuary project as part of her marine biology masters, Denise and Brother had a few ideas to share. It was an interesting meeting of academia and purely self taught techniques from a careers worth of observations.

Although we were tempted to stay for a couple of weeks to help out, we eventually left and found a stunning little place with it’s own beach, big spite bottles and home made bread doorstop sandwiches – great!

Having seen through the taxi drivers go-slow tactic we set off back to the main town on foot (remembering to keep the sheep to port).
