Curacao

By Ewan | March 31, 2009

Curacao was next on the list. Here we caught up with Ewan’s parents on Sea Topaz again (they’d sailed here from St Lucia), and also some of Ewan’s Dutch family on holiday in the local resort.
We tucked into the anchorage in Spanish Town (another Spanish Town!) which is an amazing inland waterway with a very narrow entrance – a little unnerving on approach (and we managed to find the bottom on the way out).
Duncan and Ewan took the opportunity to learn how to dive, and signed up for a PADI Open Water course. Curacao offers some great diving and we got the opportunity to learn on some stunning reef just a short swim out from the beach (we didn’t spend any time in a pool – not quite what PADI had in mind for their ‘confined water dive 1-4 I think). We saw lots of moray eels, a couple of turtles, a seahorse (finally), baracuda and loads more I’ve now forgotten in addition to the standard reef and fish. The course was topped off with an extra dive on one of the local wrecks (the ‘Superior Producer’) which was a great experience.
There is also some great freestyle windsurfing to be had in the anchorage, and Ewan did his best to keep up with some very handy local sailors.
We also had some administrative work to tackle. The credit crunch/econodoom even caught up with us when we were told by our insurers that they couldn’t offer us cover for the pacific. Lots of emails and Skype calls later we managed to find some cover from alternative insurers which allowed us to continue westwards towards the pacific.
Charlie left the boat from Curacao to return to real life back in the UK. Charlie had been with us since Antigua (for his second stint on the boat), so we were very briefly back down to three. Then Mairi (who did the Atlantic crossing with us) joined us again and has been doing a great job of keeping ‘the boys’ in order!
