Grenada
By Ewan | March 29, 2009
From Tobago Cays we went briefly to Union Island to check out of St Vincent and the Grenadines. On our way over to Carriacou (part of Grenada) we stopped off at Petit St Vincent for lunch. With the wind close to 20knots Denise and Ewan quickly rigged up some windsurfing kit to enjoy the amazing setting and some great conditions. After a few boat fly-byes we (the windsurfers) landed on Petit St Vincent to have a quick look around. The western end of the island is dotted with secluded shaded chair and hammock spots. There is even cold water left out! Presumably for the high fare paying guests and not the illegal immigrant windsurfers! From there we windsurfed over to a tiny island called Mopion (see the video) which is just a bit of beach really with a palm type shade and that’s it.
Next stop was Carriacou. We had one night here at anchor to check into Grenada, and to drop of Alex and Charlie who explored the island from land for a couple of days. Duncan, Denise and Ewan sailed on the following day to Prickly Bay on the main island of Grenada to pick up Greg. We had some awesome sailing at first – downwind, averaging about 9 knots. But then the wind dropped to nothing, then only a bit, and before we were really ready for it, we were round the southern tip of Grenada beating into 20kts of wind and some steep seas. Luckily we didn’t have far to go and before too long we took down the main and just came in under the #4 jib.
Once we’d picked up Greg it started to rain, and barely stopped for the next 48 hours (the rest of our stay in Grenada!) – and this is the ‘dry’ season! Something about taking the weather with you…?!
Plans to hire a car and explore the island the following day were scrapped once we’d discovered that all the small cars had already been hired, and we’d given up on the hope of a sunny day. So waterproofs on, we jumped into a taxi and went to explore the St Georges, the capital.
It was raining in St Georges too, but we managed to find some interesting stuff. The biggest fish carcasses we’d ever seen in the market. Cows waiting to be slaughtered and butchered right next door to the butcher – makes sense really. And most interestingly - not a single church that had a roof – they’d all been taken by the hurricane in 2004. We later learnt from a local that this was a good thing (better than only some church roofs missing) since then none of the religions could claim to be God’s chosen ones – genius!
