Margarita
By Ewan | March 31, 2009
Slightly off the beaten Caribbean track, Margarita is an island off the Venezuelan mainland. It is a popular holiday destination for Venezuelans and was our first taste of South America. This place isn’t exactly set up for easy cruising life. Check in (and check out) took several days and security is less than perfect here, so all the easily removable deck hardware came down below. The group split into two for the week we had on the island. Greg, Denise and Ewan went off with their windsurfing and kitesurfing kit to a beach resort called El Yaque, known for it’s windsurfing and kitesurfing. We stayed in a cheap little hotel for the week and had a great time chilling out on the beach, windsurfing, kiting, catching up with old friends and enjoying the odd rum and coke. Pub golf was the drinking highlight (lowlight?!) with all of us making it to the 8th hole, although Ewan had no recollection of it the following morning.
Meanwhile Duncan, Charlie and Alex stayed on the boat, and explored the sights and sounds of the island, wishing that we’d brought more cash to make use of the black market rates.
